Welcome Home, The Oshkosh JLTV

As you know, for mare than 30 years AM General Humvee was serving to USA Army Forces and Marine Corps with a great reliability and success.

However changing technology, armor and weapon demands forced USA Army to go for a renewal, and it decided to replace the Humvee with more advanced version, Oshkosh JLTV.

Yet, it doesn’t mean Humvee was totally disqualified. Oshkosh JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle) will be used for frontline services while Humvee will be used for other support services in the background until 2050.

Here Are Basic Reasons Behind The Replacement.

Engine Factors

During 1970’s AM General came to the stage with mind blowing powerful tactical vehicle, Humvee, with naturally aspired 150-hp 6.2L diesel V-8, with a 3-speed automatic transmission, comparing to already existing M151 MUTT’s gas-swilling 71-hp 2.3-liter I-4 and four-speed manual back on that time.

Then it was upgraded to a 190hp 6.5L turbodiesel V-8, 4-speed automatic which was enough power to be capable of handling 13.000 pounds.

What makes The Oshkosh JLTV’s unique is, it has GM’s new 400hp L5P Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 engine which was modified for rough duty and conditions.

Featured Suspensions

Both the Humvee and JLTV are designed around their four-wheel-drive systems. As we don’t know the classified features of new JLTV, we can only talk about that it could meet the requirements of Army by going anywhere with more capabilities and faster than Humvee, thanks to its new TAK-4i suspension system.

Reliability

Humvees were reliable enough in the field back on that times, yet as years passed, they got old, and army’s weapon demands, as a result load demands, has changed. In the last decade, they started to be insufficient for the operations and field.

During test phase of JLTV program, both vehicles were compared with 22 different armored test vehicles provided by each of the companies, where JLTV was the way successful with all the tests.
